The “Fair Play Mecenate” prize, awarded by the International Award Association, recognizes Emilio Sánchez Vicario for his supportive work with the Emilio Sánchez Vicario Foundation. The Foundation, passionate about how sport and tennis in particular can contribute to personal development, promotes tennis for people with physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities.
The award is the most important in Italy related to sport and also appoints the winner the new Fair Play Ambassador. The decision was made by an international jury made up of figures from all around the world, including journalists and representatives from institutions from the world of sport.
“For me, I never expected to receive this prize, it is such a pleasant surprise and I’m delighted. It’s not just special to me because it recognizes charitable work, but because it is awarded by a country like Italy – my wife Simona is Italian,” states Emilio Sánchez Vicario.
The prizes were presented at a gala, retransmitted live by the television channel RAI TV in the town of Castiglion Fiorentino, Tuscany. Previous prize-winners include Lindford Christie, Sergei Bubka, Edwin Moses, Michael Doohan, Sven Goran Eriksoon and Marcello Lippi among others.
